Have a positive attitude:
- Make sure to have a positive attitude when talking about reading with your child
- If you have a positive attitude so will your child
Make a special reading space:
- Having a designated area, that is comfortable and calm is a good place to have your child room
- Make this a fun and exciting place to go so the child will ask to go read
Being a part of their reading experience:
- Show your child that you like to read too, if your child sees you reading this could motivate them to read as well
- At night, let them pick out a book to read to you, instead of you reading the nightly bedtime story
- Get siblings involved. Having siblings or friends reading with your child could make it more fun
Working with others to help your child:
- Talk to your child’s teacher or maybe their friends’ parents on ideas to help your child to become better readers
- Teachers can give good ideas on what they do in class and what parents could be doing at home
- Getting your child’s friends together to read could be a fun way for your child to read because they are with others who are doing the same activity
